A journey into the dark side of gangsterism and drugs. The movie begins with a young Castello growing up surrounded by criminal activities in Sungai Golok and eventually becoming involved in them. Whilst on the rise in his criminal career, he falls for Chalita, the sister of an associate, and gets married to her. The marriage is short lived as Castello eventually gets caught and is sentenced to prison for his crimes. In prison, Castello turns over a new leaf in the hopes of atoning for his bad deeds. However, all is not as easy as it seems upon his release.

Set during the confrontation between the Japanese Army and the Communist Party of Malaya in the year 1944. Four friends - Ahmad, Osman , Puteh and Harun choose to serve the Japanese Police Force in order to survive. "KL Gangster" tells the tale of two brothers who get involved in the world of gangsterism. The older brother Malek (Aaron Aziz) was imprisoned for five years after being betrayed by his own gang which was started by Shark (Syamsul), the step brother of the most influential gangster in Kuala Lumpur, King (Ridzuan Hashim). Malek who leads a normal life after being released, is pulled back into the world he left behind after all those years. Especially since his younger brother Jai (Adyputra) is influenced by the gangsters and decides to work for Shark bringing everything down in chaos.
