The film is set in southern Georgia during Ottoman control, where inhabitants, who were driven from their homes due to enemy invasions, try to return home through different means. One of these inhabitants is the young scholar Antimoz.
During WWII, one of the villages in Guria is once revived by the noise of gypsies camped nearby.
Mito, a Kakheti peasant, considers Italy a close country, as he fought alongside Italian partisans against the fascist invaders during World War II. Decades later, the Italian government sent him a letter inviting him to Italy to receive a medal.
