Bitter hatred had always existed between two Rajput families, namely those of Bharat Singh and Prithviraj Singh, resulting in the death of Bharat's nephew. Years later, Prithviraj's son Dharamraj gets married to Sunaina, who gives birth to a baby boy named Deshraj. On Deshraj's 10th birthday, Prithviraj goes to make peace with Bharat and invites him for a birthday party, which Bharat attends, but there is no end to the animosity - which results in the death of Prithviraj, when his chauffeur, Chandu, is bribed and manipulated by Bharat and his men. Architect and Poet Salim Ahmed Salim lives in Nizamuddin, India, along with his widowed mother. He re-locates to Lucknow where he is employed with Shirazi & Company. He instructs her not to leave the house, and when she persists, he sells the house and decides to re-locate to Lahore, Pakistan. Salim attempts to stop them but Hamid assaults him and leaves him senseless. Salim does recover but takes to alcohol and a Courtesan named Phoolrani in a big way. His mother intervenes, and compels him to get married to their new neighbor's daughter, Sahira, which he reluctantly does. Now trapped in a marriage with a woman he does not love, Salim continues to frequent Phoolrani's brothel, with hopes of being re-united with his estranged sweetheart - only to find that the seemingly demure Sahira will not let go of him that easily.

Anil Dhawan plays Gopal who has been gifted with a wonderful voice and sings in the village drama company. With the encouragement of his sister he shifts to Mumbai where he is helped by Shiva played by Shatrughan Sinha who is car polisher, Pradeep Kumar who is a Shenai player and Shanno played by Yogita Bali, who are very poor. The story revolves on how struggles mark the life of Anil Dhawan who loses his eyesight and Shatrughan Sinha who is jailed trying to earn extra money to help his friend. Ultimately Gopal is helped by a crook who tries to exploit his talent and humiliate his poor friends. Will Gopal be able to prove his mettle in such alien circumstances and people know what is the worth of true friendship?
CBI Inspector Kumar arrives home late one night, and watches in shock as his wife, Ashoo, being very intimate with another male. Enraged, he takes out his revolver and aims to shoot and kill both of them, but does not do so. Instead he fires a warning shot, and asks both of them to leave immediately. He does not permit Ashoo to take their only son, Prakash, with her. Kumar spends all the rest of his free time bringing up Prakash, and hating his wife. Years later, Prakash has grown up, and is now employed with a business firm, whose owner is Mohan. Prakash meets with Mohan's beautiful sister, Kiran, and falls in love with her. Kiran too is attracted to Prakash. What Prakash does not know is that Mohan is a gangster, with many aliases, and he also does not know that Mohan is the same male his mother had been having an affair with when he was a child.

Concerned about the outbreak of plague in a distant rural village in India, Dr. D.D. Sinha asks a number of prominent doctors to go there and treat the ailing and prevent the disease from spreading. No one except his protégé, Dr. Paras, is prepared to go there. Dr. Paras travels there, works with the villagers to prevent the disease and treats the ailing, and is successful in preventing it's spreading to other communities. He meets with village belle, Lajwanti alias Lajjo, and both fall in love with each other.
