The movie takes place during Russia's civil war between the Reds (Bolsheviks) and the Whites (Mensheviks). Andrejka and Yarinka are a young betrothed couple in the village of Malinovka, caught between the battle lines. Gritsian is the leader of a Menshevik band who are planning to attack the village. Yarinka appeals to the local Bolshevik commander for his faction's help. The Bolsheviks quickly come up with a plan to save the village... but the plan requires Yarinka to enter into a pretend marriage with Gritsian.
The heroes of Shukshin's play are indeed energetic people in the full sense of the word. Jacks of all trades, quick-witted and dishonest, grabbers and thieves, who can be called businessmen of the era of socialism, for whom there was no use for their practical acumen and intelligence. Tovstonogov and the actors breathed true life into these characters.
A television film based on the famous production by the Bolshoi Drama Theater is yet another interpretation of Chekhov’s “boring story” — about the life of an intelligent and conscientious Russian man, Ivan Petrovich Voynitsky, “lost” in the rural backwater.

To catch the criminal, Peter Isaev takes an unconventional decision. He applies to participate in the city's boxing championship, hoping that the criminal will probably come to watch the former champion fight. Isayev has to overcome each stage of the championship with difficulty: it has been five years since he left the ring...
