They must go to West Germany in order to find and return the children who were taken out of the Soviet Union by the Nazis and are now kept in atrocious conditions under the supervision of British intelligence. Former allies want to grow real spies out of their children.

In 1942, local teenagers are organizing the underground resistance in the city of Krasnodon during the Nazi occupation of Russia. The teens manage to outsmart the Nazis in their fight, and their activity lifts the spirits of the surviving citizens.

This literary adaptation was one of only two films made during World War II on the subject of the Civil War following the Bolshevik Revolution, as attention by filmmakers and viewers shifted away from past history and toward the current conflict.
