Mary has married Jack Langdon , the physical instructor of the young ladies' seminary where she is being schooled. Because she is underage and risks losing the fortune her uncle has left her, Mary is compelled to keep the marriage a secret, but a baby adds to the complications. At first the young couple leaves it in the care of an Indian woman. Waldo Pennanink , the son of the school's headmaster, becomes suspicious of all the time the couple is spending with the Indian woman and the baby.
Engaged to Harley Jones, fickle Phoebe Mabee flirts with Anson Newton. She and Harley, as a result, break their engagement, but within six months they are reconciled and married. Phoebe becomes a mother, and when Harley is sent abroad by his business firm she and her two children go to a summer resort where she renews her romance with Newton.
Minnie, the village tomboy, meets a handsome Stranger after playing ball one afternoon. She invites him to see a bridge model her father has designed; but finding her intoxicated father in the act of destroying the model, she swears vengeance on the local bootleggers and joins a newspaper as sportswriter so as to expose their activities. Pike, the station agent, leader of the bootleggers, spreads a scandal about Minnie when she rejects him, but through the help of the Stranger everything is cleared up.
