A barber, murderer because of jealousy, spends twenty years in jail. He cannot, however adjust himself to a changed world and to the hypocrisy of his own relatives and decides to return behind bars.

In hell, equipped with the latest technological advances, the devils watch the happiness of a Viennese revue singer and her sculptor fiancé on a television screen. Some representatives are sent to Earth to seduce the singer and thus undermine the couple's love, but this soon leads to rebellion among the devilish emissaries, who want to emigrate.

The musician Peter Paul Müller (Dieter Borsche) lives for his job. So much so that he also forgets the circumstances of the Nazi dictatorship. In the years between 1930 and 1946 he was only allowed to perform in small clubs, but after he met the pretty singer Marion (Vera Molnar), the big breakthrough came. But with the many appearances, the relationship with his wife Annemie (Kristina Söderbaum) threatens to break up.

Gabriela once a famous singer who enjoyed great success. She married, had a daughter Andrea, but pursued her career. Now that Andrea has matured into a young woman, Gabriela is overwhelmed by maternal remorse.

Germany in the post-war period. Due to the circumstances of the time and his lack of prospects, the young Bimbo has become a hoodlum who keeps his head above water with petty crime. One night he robs the writer Percy, but is picked up by the police shortly afterwards in a drunken state. As he has Percy's wallet with him, the police think he is the robber and take him to his address. Percy can hardly believe his eyes when he sees the robber again. But instead of handing him over to the police, he takes Bimbo under his wing and tries to make a better person out of him - not an easy task.

Told in flashback, the film recounts the events leading up to the killing of good-for-nothing Curt Jurgens. Warned by her friends and relatives that Jurgens is a bad job, impulsive Ina Kahr marries him anyway. His ceaseless philandering and abuse wears away at Ina to the point that she contemplates poisoning her husband...
