A look at the legendary Czech sound designer and his profession. Editor and documentary filmmaker Adéla Špaljová has her father Ivo Špalj talk about his life, career, and working methods. Over the course of his long life, sound designer Ivo Špalj (*1940) has collaborated on hundreds of films and become a mentor for at least one generation of men and women behind the mixing board. This gentle documentary also shows “Engi” (as he is known to his colleagues) again working with Jan Švankmajer, whose films he has lent their typical, dense, and sophisticated sound mix.

Famous actor Bořivoj Vojan arrives unexpectedly at a student film festival in a small town. The smug, aging man has bruised his ribs on the way and his frustration deepens with every passing minute of his stay – the amateurish organization of the festival, the lousy food, the private accommodation with the confused grandmother Pánková. What's more, he has no idea that one of the most unpleasant encounters awaits him, with the local drunk journalist Merhautová. But there is also tension among the students who organize the festival – Míra is ambitious and promiscuous, Šárka is kind and naive, Jana is beautiful and manipulative, and Matyáš is perpetually stoned and childishly in love.

In 1951, the well-known Czech actress Jiřina Štěpničková receives a letter from Austria from director František Čáp, who has recently emigrated. Together with a small group of people and her young son Jirka, she entrusts herself to a smuggler and embarks on a risky journey across the border. But something goes wrong. They are caught. Everything had been planned in advance. The smuggler himself is a member of the StB. But that's only the beginning.
