As the village of Doel dies a slow death under pressure from the advancing Antwerp docks, the elderly Emilienne tries to continue with her everyday life. But the village pastor Verstraete dies and her friends leave. Ultimately she is also forced to let go as well.
Tom, the filmmaker, receives a letter from South Africa. His long forgotten 95-year old grandmother Mariann, asks him to come and help her with her will. Tom sets off to South Africa and decides to bring his camera. This starts a journey for the filmmaker and his grandmother, looking back at her life and trying to understand his own.
In this intimate family portrait, documentary filmmaker Tom Fassaert observes the relationship between his father Rob (72) and his older brother René (75). What begins as a tragicomic film about their unusual dynamic – one was a psychologist for many years, the other a psychiatric patient – turns into a moving search for their unknown roots.
