A celebration of Czech music. This is a concert featuring the biggest names on the domestic pop scene. Dozens of singers paid tribute to Karel Gott, a musical legend loved not only in our country. You will hear many of his beautiful and famous songs, including hits such as "Lady Carneval," "Jdi za štěstím," "Trezor," "Co sudičky přály nám," and "Srdce nehasnou." All performed by Lucie Bílá, Marek Ztracený, Monika Absolonová, Ondřej Brzobohatý, Michal David, Václav Noid Bárta, Charlotta Ella Gottová, Richard Krajčo, Jiří Suchý, Hana Zagorová, and many others. Actress Jiřina Bohdalová will be a special guest, and Libor Bouček will host the evening.

Posthumously premiered in 1930, From the House of the Dead derives from Dostoevsky’s autobiographical 1862 novel that drew on his experience as a political prisoner in Siberia. Janáček focuses on Dostoevsky’s idea of the “spark of God” in every human being that has the potential to redeem even the most hardened criminal.

Cesta ke štěstí by Hana Zagorová is an extensive music and video project that maps the singer’s successful career. On this DVD, you’ll find legendary songs from the early years of her career — Bludička Julie, Obraz smutný slečny, and Mrtvá láska. The film archives have also preserved Gvendolína, which audiences of the former Czechoslovak Television saw only during its original broadcast in 1972. Set in a Siberian prison camp, Janacek's final opera centers on the experiences of recent arrival Alexandre Petrovitch Goriantchikov (Olaf Bar), a nobleman who finds relief from the harsh conditions in the friendship of the illiterate Alyeya (Eric Stoklossa). Recorded at the Grand Theatre de Provence, this stage production is directed by the well-respected Patrice Chereau and features famed conductor Pierre Boulez. Condensing the life stories – memories of prison in Silesia – related by Dostoyevsky in his work The House of the Dead, Leoš Janáček composed an opera filled with burning desire and longing. Contagious savagery, cruelty and brutality are exacerbated by the confines of the prison. However, within its concrete walls emerge both tenderness and cruelty at the sight of an injured bird; a multitude of stories and highly personal monologues. With this production, first performed at the Wiener Festwochen in 2007, the Paris Opera pays tribute to Patrice Chéreau.

Separated and fragmented, the scenes combine in a series of tableaux to tell the story of Wozzeck, an ordinary soldier whose only solace is the love of his companion Marie. However, the latter’s fidelity is not unfailing and Wozzeck is haunted by torment. His officers and comrades in arms do little to improve the situation. The omnipresent tension in this profoundly romantic work unifies the fifteen scenes with their complex tonalities alternating between Verist notes and the force of ritualised actions. Christoph Marthaler’s production provides an atmosphere of contemporaneity strongly accentuated by the choice of a single set, where the men’s despair is submerged in Berg’s dearly sought-after sobriety.
