In the small town of Rockwell, Maine in October 1957, a giant metal machine befriends a nine-year-old boy and ultimately finds its humanity by unselfishly saving people from their own fears and prejudices.

The Reverend Nicholas Lumb is taken into the other world by elemental spirits and replaced by an exact copy, a changeling made from an oak log. When the spirits have finished with him he is 'cancelled'. Eventually the original Lumb turns up roaming about the west of Ireland.
