The story of a poor, disintegrating family of a mother Fišerová and her three children. It is set in the 1890s - a time when the poor working classes did not yet have the right to vote or a permanent eight-hour working day.

One busy day for a busy woman: worrying about children, the responsible work of a nurse in the centre and housework. In the evening, her husband is due back after a long time.

Wandering through the forest, a woodcutter finds a golden fern whose seed turns into a beautiful woman - they fall in love. After getting drunk in a village feast, he gets to sign up to the army. The fairy gives him a shirt to wear and asks him to swear he will never abandon it. At the war front, he falls in love with the the colonel's daughter and will have to perform various feats to get her attention.

A psychological study of the life of a woman, a working mother of two young children. The film captures a small slice of her life, just one day, during which the heroine takes stock of what she has experienced so far and what she has succeeded or failed in. And it's not an optimistic one, as she searches in vain for a clue: her marriage has failed and her affair with a married man does not offer a bright future...
