A ruthless woman's adulterous affair with a drifter sets in motion a chain-reaction of murder and deception in a remote village in 19th Century Mtsensk.
Three stories are put together as an omnibus: 1) The adventures of a little girl named Zorica who tries to find her dog while her mother thinks she's in the kindergarten. 2) The clash between a group of boys with the superintendent of a building who doesn't let them keep a dog in the housing. 3) A group of boys play with a stolen revolver.

The chairman of the municipality, the first citizen of this small town, supports the plan of female architect-designer, a pretty girl he fell for. But to make locals sure that he didn't approve the old center's demolition under her influence, the president begins to avoid the girl, who then marries another man. By carrying out the ritual wedding, the first citizen of a small town is left with his city all alone.
End of the WWII, concentration camp somewhere in Poland. Prisoners have heard that Germans have plans to kill them all, before the Allies come. One of the prisoners escapes, and tries to find the Allies. A manhunt begins.
A bleak prewar environment of Yugoslavian provincial town during 1930s.
Upon returning home at war's end, a young lieutenant discovers that his family has been murdered by the Nazis. It's all the handiwork of a treasonous "Chetnik," who during the war worked against the partisans on behalf of the Germans. In bitter retaliation, the lieutenant sets about to decimate the Chetnik's family. He stops short, however, when he realizes that the sins of the fathers are not always passed down to the innocent children.
Seaside in the summer: a meeting place of all sorts of people and professions. Elderly Mr Paja and two youths, Zorica and Mirko, experience many adventures in accordance with their own respective age and desires.
As Hitler's Nazi army invades Yugoslavia, a Serbian village girl joins the underground movement, falls in love with the Croat soldier Ivan who is an expert in blowing up trains, and inspires villagers young and old to aggressively participate in the resistance.
Vladimir Dubrovsky returns from St. Petersburg to his family estate, where he finds his father dying and learns that all his lands and serfs have been fraudulently taken by the owner of a neighboring estate. Having organized a detachment of peasants who refused to obey the new owner, our hero intends to restore justice and take revenge on his offender.
