The lives of many people in one Serbian town are changed after Tito's breakup with Stalin.
In the whirlpool of WW2, two peaceful towns that have already tasted peace are once again attacked by the Germans. Casualties are high, but the dream of a boy and a girl about their liberated towns cannot be destroyed.
While trying to push away a little boy who keeps coming near his cottage at the river, a whimsical mayor meets boy's mother. These people find hard to make contacts because of their own troublemarks from the past, even though they know that the common effort is needed for the future and survival.

"The Apples" (1955) is the graduation film of two of the most important directors of the following decades, Iulian Mihu and Manole Marcus, and shows a young couple mocked by a nobleman because they had stolen some apples from his estate.
With his nose pressed against the glass, four-year-old Ionel watches the kids playing ball in the street with great interest. His father, a schoolteacher, has lost his job. Now he goes to various institutions in vain, because in bourgeois Romania it is not easy to find a job. Ionel waits for his father every night and while waiting for him he dreams of getting a real yellow ball for his birthday. His father realizes that it is necessary to get the money and buy the ball. After all, the boy is crippled, and the ball is the only hope for him to get well...
The Nazi troops are retreating from Romania. On a wester town, they have to be held back until some strategic trains can leave the train station.
