Shot in stylish black-and-white, this three-act fable, set in wartime Chongqing, focuses on the indifferent rich, the head clerk on a farm, and some young intruders. Based on a 1943 short story, the film was directed by noted screenwriter Mei Feng.
Zhang Yimou directed his first Beijing-Opera production in the Chinese capital at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA): "You and Me" is based on a 2700-year-old Chinese imperial story from the chapter "Lord Zheng defeats Duan in Yan" from the legend of Zuo – a tale of betrayal, the power of infantile love and the fact that blood is thicker than water.

Set in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the "Drunken Concubine" tells a story of emperor's beloved concubine Yang Yuhuan, also known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. The story follows Yang in one night in which she supposed to have dinner with the Emperor, but the emperor never turns up. Yang realizes he chose another concubine over her and feeling humiliated, furious and depressed, she instead spends the night drinking alcohol and getting intoxicated. The opera shows the change of Yang's mood and also reflects how ancient feudalism oppresses women.
