Lisetta, the daughter of a fisherman, lives with her father and brother on the island of Capri. When Serrani, an Italian who has grown wealthy in New York, visits the island, he induces Lisetta to accompany him to America. There he abandons her and she becomes a dancer in an underworld café owned by "Dago" Joe, where she meets the artist Stanford Graham, who employs her as a model. Meanwhile, Lisetta's brother Domenic comes to New York to avenge his sister's dishonor.

John Preston, ranch owner, owes a large sum of money to Don Jose Praz. The Don's rascal son, Raphael, with the aid of an accomplice, steals some of Preston's cattle. Raphael loves Kate Preston and urges his father to press the matter of the notes as a lever to win Preston's consent to the marriage. Kate's heart, however, belongs to the foreman, Jack Deering. Unable to force Preston's consent, Raphael kidnaps the girl and carries her to a lone cabin. Game as every Western girl who has ridden the free plains, Kate fights him, but the villain's strength beats her down. The girl's horse has meanwhile run home. Jack, accompanied by the cowboys, starts on the trail. He arrives at the cabin and, after a death duel with the Mexican, kills him as the cowboys come up.

When Dorothy's Southern, aristocratic father Colonel Raleigh refuses to let her marry Forbes Stewart, a Northern gambler, the couple elopes. When Dorothy soon thereafter becomes pregnant, Forbes vows to reform, but authorities arrest him on a gambling charge, and he serves a year in prison. During that time, and just before the birth of the baby, a woman comes to Dorothy and claims to be Forbes' wife. Stunned, Dorothy returns to her father, but the colonel throws her out, and so, on her own, she has her baby, whom the community believes to be illegitimate. Convinced that she has sinned, Dorothy is about to kill herself when Forbes, just out of jail, finds her and explains that the other woman simply had been an ex-sweetheart trying to win him back.
