Roman Shilo, a known criminal, suddenly must deal with his fourteen years old daughter and not only with her but with her little stepbrother and stepsister as well.

The film is an attempt to recreate the world of Marc Chagall and his myth within the genre of a folklore ballad. We are not exploiting Chagall's images, but are attempting to create a dramatized projection of his creativity onto the movie screen, relying on both, facts and fantasy (as Chagall himself would).The story is based on real events which occurred at the time of Chagall's short-lived period in Vitebskin in 1917-18, during which time he creates the Academy of Modern Art, inspired by his dreams of a bright and beautiful future. Many pictures by Chagall and Malevich are used in the film.

Post-WWII Russia, industrial city of Sverdlovsk. Former opera singer and mother to four children, Nina Levitskaya knows nothing about the fate of her husband. Communist party functionary Alexander disappeared almost a year ago and is now rumored to be in Moscow. With life becoming increasingly hard for the family, Nina decides to risk it all in hope of a reunion. She hastily sells everything she can, gathers her children, and sets out for the capital.

This is an important event in the life of a young family. The child goes to kindergarten for the first time! And the young mother, who spent five years on maternity leave, encounters a feeling of freedom for the first time. Not knowing where to apply herself now, she falls in love. The daughter witnesses an innocent flirtation and, misinterpreting the situation, tells everything to her father... Until recently, an absolutely happy “unit of society” begins to collapse. And young parents have to grow up before our eyes in order to be able to save their family.

It happens that any small thing can turn a life one hundred and eighty degrees. That's the life of Nina flowed habitually and comfortably: a loved one, a beautiful house and ahead - a cloudless future ... ... The quarrel broke out instantly - it cost Nina only to say taht she desires to get a baby. Furious Gleb, whose plans did not include diapers and sleepless nights, flies out of the house, but soon he returns completely lost and frightened - he just hit a man and fled the crime scene. That night their new life began ...

A parable about the right of an individual to freedom, the cost of that freedom, and the choice of one's own path.
