A mother, daughter and two of their friends live in an old Western-style house in Suginami. As secrets are revealed, they face challenges together.

The film version of the stage production was shot during the play’s 2022 run at the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo.

Half a year has passed since the official approval of TOKYO MER. Kitami is racking his brains over the issue of a second doctor to replace Otowa, who has left the team in order to expand MER to ordinance-designated cities nationwide. Shonosuke Furukehashi (Hiroshi Tamaki) is a young samurai and the second son of Sozaemon (Bunchin Katsura) of Togane Domain, Kazusa Province. Sozaemon serves as an attendant, but one day, he is suddenly suspected of accepting bribes. Forged documents written in handwriting startlingly identical to his offer incontrovertible evidence. Framed for accepting bribes he knows nothing about, Sozaemon commits ritual suicide for his “crime”. Shonosuke’s elder brother Katsunosuke (Satoshi Hashimoto), an assistant instructor at the domain’s training hall, is placed under house arrest. Because of that, Shonosuke leaves for Edo alone in order to clear the name of his beloved father.

Kindaichi is off on yet another case, this time in Shanghai. When the father of a Chinese friend of the young Kindaichi is murdered at the circus, it is up to the ever-resourceful and clever young high-school detective to solve the case. But hidden in the background is the 4000 year-old legend of the Shanghai Mermaid.
