Daisy Rasammah Daniels, known popularly as Rukmani Devi (15 January 1923 – 28 October 1978: Sinhala: රුක්මණී දේවී) was a Sri Lankan film actress and singer who was often acclaimed as "The Nightingale of Sri Lanka". She made it to the silver screen via the stage and had acted in close to 100 films at the time of her death. Having an equal passion for singing as well as a melodious voice, she was Sri Lanka's foremost female singer in the gramophone era. After her death, she was awarded the Sarasaviya 'Rana Thisara'- Life Time Achievement Award at the 1979 Sarasaviya Awards Festival.

Rich man's son Rajesh loves Savita, daughter of a teacher he got fired. She helps him excel in college. They marry against his father's wishes. Their friend Jivan creates problems between them, leading to separation.

The film centers on three middle aged men staying in a hostel. At a later stage, another tenant comes to stay in the hostel, where he falls in love with the eldest daughter of the hostel owner. The entire film was based on how the old three tenants trying their best to chase the new tenant and win the heart of owner's daughter. The plot is based on the Tamil film Indru Poi Naalai Vaa.

Dr. Sarath (Tony Ranasinghe) domineers over his timid wife Vineetha (Sriyani Amarasena). When she is to have a Caesarean delivery of their baby, Sarath refuses to be present even though he himself is a doctor. She dies during surgery and Sarath is forced to live with the spectre of his wife hanging over him.

Lasanda is the name of the girl played by the famous actress Nita Fernando. Her acting amplifies the moral qualities of her heroine – a proud woman, irreconcilable to everything that degrades human dignity. The world is divided into two clearly delineated camps. In one of them are the rich mine owners and their accomplices, in the other - the working class, the poor, forced to make ends meet with odd jobs. The first reign supreme, believing that they can buy off any crime with money, although they fear an organized uprising by workers. The second are almost powerless in the face of tyranny and violence; their existence, their future depend on the whim of their masters.

Ralahamy, a man of high status, dies leaving his family in debt after having squandered his fortune through extensive drinking and other vices. To get back into wealth, Ralahamy's widow Tackla pushes their daughter Ranjani to marry Victor, a wealthy older man with a child from an earlier marriage. In this process, Samson, Ranjani's boyfriend, who had tried extensively to get the family back into good graces going so far as to pay off their debts, is spurned. He then goes abroad to win a fortune. When Samson returns he learns of Ranjani's engagement to Victor and tries to reach her through letters. His letters are hidden from her however, and rumours spread that Samson is now a cripple. Ultimately the truth is revealed.

The film is based on the folklore of Andare, the legendary court jester in Sri Lankan history known for his wit and humor.
