A painter's wife becomes ill. A friend comes to comfort him,but he falls in love with her.

Four comedic episodes follows different taxi drivers.

Naples 1821. Alphonse, a young poet belonging to a noble French family, is caught by a storm at sea. Fortunately the boat manage to reach the shores of Procida, where Alphonse is welcomed by the family of Andrea. Here he meets the beautiful Graziella.

A young woman, her sister-in-law and her ten year old daughter are violently traumatised by invading Austrian soldiers. Later, in Verona, both woman discover they are pregnant. After a suicide attempt, one has an abortion the other keeps her child - and both faces struggles with friends and family as they return to their homes.

19th century Sardou period melodrama turned into a vehicle for diva star Lyda Borelli: an aristocratic French lady leaves her unfaithful husband and becomes involved with a member of Robespierre's revolutionary regime.

Amelia, a beautiful and irrepressible girl known as "La Rossa", returns from Paris to her country, a small seaside town in southern Italy, where her father is the lighthouse keeper. To her father and her fellow villagers, she gives the impression that she is married to a rich gentleman. In reality she is only the friend of Pierre Dupont, an elegant Parisian bandit. Dupont, however, actually gives the girl a certain economic comfort. Later Pierre arrives in the country incognito, being wanted for a large theft of jewels in Paris, and Amelia, her lover and accomplice, helps him to hide.

A young marquis seduces a farmer's daughter and then leaves her while she's pregnant with his child. Many years later he comes back and seduces the girl's sister.
