Die Ton Steine Scherben gibt's seit 1985 nicht mehr, aber ihre Bedeutung für die deutsche Musikgeschichte ist bis heute ungebrochen. Land in Sicht präsentiert neben einem Konzert ein längeres Interview mit dem verstorbenen Scherben-Sänger Rio Reiser und diverse Extras, die den einzigartigen Stellenwert der Band untermauern. Die Live-Aufnahmen vom 30. Mai 1983 aus der Offenbacher Stadthalle sind nicht immer perfekt -- die Bühne ist größtenteils ziemlich dunkel ausgeleuchtet, und der Ton weist einige kleinere Schwankungen auf --, aber diese leichten Unsauberkeiten machen Land in Sicht nur noch authentischer und sympathischer. Rio Reiser besticht mit hundertprozentigem emotionalem Einsatz, und seine Hinterleute beweisen, dass die Scherben immer deutlich mehr waren, als eine Band mit Lagerfeuer-Protestsong-Flair. Da wird hart gerockt, satt gegroovt, und die originellen, komplexen Arrangements heben sich meilenweit von Politpunk-, Deutschrock- und NDW-Klischees ab.

Hans Michael Westerfeld, a self-styled Johnny West, wants to become an American-style rock star. To this end, he works as a roadie, one of the crew that takes care of the equipment during the German tour of the black American singing group called the Manhattans.

A young woman is researching her brother's murderer and places an advertisement in the newspaper promising 7,000 marks for any useful information. The two young crooks Rio and Tommy sense their chance and send her on a futile journey across Germany, Belgium and France, "somewhere by the sea". Along the way, she meets strange characters, including a salesman named Chandler, with whom she spends a night.

Spanning 50 years, the documentary traces a path through the Berlin district of Kreuzberg, linking the legacy of the rock band "Ton Steine Scherben" - best known for their work in the 1970s - with their successors.
