In 1942, a French prisonner of war in Germany decide to escape to France using a cow hold by a lunge as a decoy. He cross all Germany in this way.

Set during World War II in France, the story begins when a resistance fighter is given shelter in an asylum by a friend who manages the institution. Soon after, the manager is arrested by the Gestapo, which gets the resistance fighter involved. He finds the informer who set his friend up and kills him. But then no one will believe his story about the informer and he becomes desperate enough to start losing his own mental balance. A young doctor and the daughter of one of the inmates help him keep it together, but he knows he cannot continue like this for long.

In France, during the Second World War, journalist Paul Roy is a member of the Resistance, while his colleague and friend Jacques Médina is a collaborator. But it's thanks to Jacques that Paul is able to remain free, as he shelters him in his home after a roundup. The two friends co-wrote various Nazi propaganda articles, which appeared under Jacques' byline. The situation becomes complicated when Paul becomes the lover of Jacques' wife.

Michel and Paul earn money from passers-by by doing chalk drawings outside the Louvre. They also make the scene at the hot spots of Paris. Sand is a wealthy and luscious blonde artist who paints nude girls and houses at her loft. When Michel's gorgeous sister shows up from out of town, both Paul and Sand fall for her.

To spice up a life that's too quiet, a couple of friends play at being gangsters, but end up meeting some real hoodlums.
