Shmaya (Shuli Rand), a small-time magician whose career consists of gigs at local venues in the north of Israel, meets Oshra (Ronit Elkabetz) at one of his shows, who possesses genuine mystical powers. Shmaya makes Oshra part of his act and together, they perform real-life feats of magic and miracles before their slack-jawed audiences. Meanwhile, Shmaya’s father – a holy man with his own loyal following, is dying. He asks his followers to bring him his estranged son, so that he can take his place after his death and lead their community. Shmaya does just that and goes on to become a spiritual leader. However, his ongoing attraction to Oshra is now on a collision course with his new calling.

Cordonia, 1950. This all but abandoned migrant camp is home to its last two remaining families: one Iraqi and the other, Polish. The Bassris came to Israel from a very wealthy background. At the age of 15, matriarch Marcelle married a man whom she has since come to despise. Marcelle passes this deep-seated hatred onto her children; her eldest son who, on arrival in Israel was whisked off to a kibbutz as part of a youth immigrant organisation, and 12-year-old, teenage girl. Alongside the hate, she is also fostering false hope for this great, imminent change in her life that will come with the help of her brother, Ezra, a successful Jewish Agency envoy. The other family hails from Poland and moved to Israel for ideological reasons. The mother, a trained teacher, tries to breathe life into the "impossible", but she, too, in times of crisis and despair, finds herself doubting the "Zionist truth".

Sergio Konstanza, a swindler, owes money to Mr. Hasson. He escapes to the desert where he joins a wacky army reserve unit whose Sergeant is engaged to one of Mr. Hasson's Daughters.

The film takes place in Tel Aviv, much of it in a fictitious local pub called Barbie, a satirical nickname for a famous Israeli mental health institution. The pub's name hints at the characters and the events which occur in the pub and which befall its owner (Daliah), the employees and customers. The plot unfolds with a streak of violence which takes a surprising turn.
