Hans Fallada tells in his published after the war novel "The drinker" the story of the agricultural wholesaler Erwin Sommer, who flees from his narrow bourgeois relations under the burdens of the new times in the kingdom of the king alcohol, whose liberty and independence promises prove a lie - the only truth of the alcohol. On behalf of the WDR television play Ulrich Plenzdorf has adapted Fallada's 1944/45 novel for a film adaptation by Tom Toelle with Harald Juhnke in the main role of Erwin Sommer.

A trusting, naive police officer is prepared to follow the ever new ideas and quirks of his spirited, enthusiastic wife out of honest conviction. However, he cannot keep up with the pace of her willingness to turn to the next new thing. As a result, he is condemned to always do the wrong thing in his love, so that in the end the only refuge left to him is a mental asylum.
The pony hotel has just been opened, but so far no guests have arrived. Dick gets Ralf to design a brochure about the hotel. In 1959, in a small German village, the annual fair is set up. When a carousel is fixed firmly in the ground, a fair worker discovers a skeleton, a steel helmet, and a machine gun. The young Monika Dahlhoff returns from the USA after two years. As soon as she arrives, she learns that her father wants to sell his traditional stud farm, because he has quarreled with the members of the equestrian club. Accordingly annoyed is the old Dahlhoff, when his daughter just fell in love with the son of his greatest enemy. In the annual "Hubertusjagd" there is a dramatic encounter between the men.
