In 1902 Switzerland, child laborer Emma is expected to thread needles, but just like children today, she desperately tries to live her dream of playing the violin.

Mika encourages his lover and management partner in Oslo's leading virtual bookshop, Annika Sörenbrandt to return to her fjord home village Fjærland to help her 25 years-estranged mother Pernille who is disabled by a fall from running the country's oldest paper books shop with her second partner. Thus Annika discovers her illegitimate half-brother Henrik still loves at home, suffering from a severe autistic condition.
