At the Central Theatre in the chorus girls' cloakroom, the girls have a very lively discussion: The ever-recurring topic - their various male acquaintances. The only one who doesn't join in the joke is the pretty Mette Madsen. She thinks her friends are frivolous and stupid. Oda Holm, who is a very pretty girl, full of sex appeal, claims that Mette, who is also an excellent chairwoman of the chorus girls' organization, is completely devoid of "Oomph". She is incapable of exerting any attraction on men. It becomes too much for Mette.
The priest on Snarø, Adam Valerius, is a widower for three years, and the young ladies in the parish are queuing up to become the next priest's wife. In a small Zealand village, where everything seems to be idyllic, lives the seamstress Bolette Jensen, a bold woman who has had her share of bitter experiences and is now feared for her sharp tongue. Bolette tends to speak her mind without mincing words, and since the truth is, as is well known, unheard of, she is not particularly liked by the parish authorities, the most prominent of whom is the parish council chairman Peter Enevoldsen. Bolette is given a serious task when the young, beautiful Sofie is about to have a baby, and Bolette immediately takes care of the unhappy girl and promises that she will probably walk up the aisle with her Karl.
It’s the day of the barber’s baby’s christening, and the guests start arriving with their flowers and gifts, dropping them off while the barber is still trying to see to his last customer. As it’s taking a while, the wet-nurse is asked to take the baby on a short walk before the ceremony begins. She comes across a handsome young soldier, who she strikes up a conversation with. When an even more handsome man passes by, she hands the baby to the soldier. He has to return to the barracks, so he finds someone to leave the baby with.
