Last year Michael Schumacher stamped his name in the history books; this year he shattered the records and raised the game in modern Formula One. But once McLaren found their form first David Coulthard and then Mika Hakkinen challenged for the title. By the penultimate race in Japan, Schumacher only needed one more win to clinch the championship title for the third time.
