Berlin at the end of the 19th Century. Alexander Hoffmann is an ambitious PhD student of Ethnology. When a delegation of the Herero and Nama tribes travels to Berlin during a ‘Colonial Exhibition’, he takes a special interest in their young female translator Kezia Kambazembi as subject for his studies.
A rising prospective attorney messes with a local brothel to uncover sexual abuse and stir’s up a hornet’s nest. As his wife dies under questionable circumstances he connects the dots. Whilst being suspected for murder himself, he has to vanish into the small town’s underground to investigate beyond the eyes of justice.
40 years after her husband is shot and killed by a terrorist while on duty as a police officer during a routine traffic check, Erika Welves (Senta Berger), aided by a journalist (Felix Eitner) finds evidence leading to the murderer. For the killer has vanished. Is living in freedom. Because the state is protecting him, keeping him safe. He in turn has supplied information concerning other terrorists. Schascha’s unique outlook on life helps Carl to come out of his shell and realise that his customers are so much more than just that to him. But when Carl unexpectedly loses his job, this vibrant community starts to fall apart - and it will take the power of books and all Schascha’s determination to bring them back together again.
