The Hitlerian army has merely encroached upon the territory of Ukraine, and the majority of the local people have been already ready to cave in to a new regime. The Ukrainian policemen have killed the boy. It is clear that there is no hope to expect the justice from the invaders, that’s why the killed boy’s mother declares the war on the hangsman.

The main character works as a model and like many women who are related to art, she is keen with struggle for the women rights and other trends. But those are just attempts to compensate the lack of the personal life. However, fate gives her the chance and sends her a modest man, so different from her bohemian environment.

Based on the play by Mykola Kulish. The film takes place at a time when Soviet power was established, and due to collectivization and excessive withdrawal of funds from grain sales abroad, famine began. Against this backdrop unfolds the story of three comrades who initially supported the revolution and the new system, but now have changed their views.
