The film portrays the Iraqi army's role in confronting Iranian aggression during the war between Iraq and Iran from 1980 to 1988. The film highlights numerous heroic acts of Iraqi army personnel during this conflict.

Ibrahim, the owner of a large car workshop, marries a poor girl called Mahasen, which his brothers fear because of their fear of sharing their inheritance. Zaman is a sweet and sad story about love and devotion, hope and fear. Zaman (Sami Kaftan), and his wife, Najma (Shatha Salim), have built their happy life together in their house of reeds and, though childless, adopted a boy, Yacine (Hussein Imad), orphaned by the 1991 Gulf War. They have lived a quiet, contented existence until Najma falls ill. The local doctor tells them she needs surgery or some special medicine he does not have. And so Zaman sets off in his small boat and journeys up the Tigris to Baghdad in search of the precious cure. Thus begins the journey of salvation and discovery for "Zaman, the Man of the Reeds."

In one of the popular neighborhoods in Baghdad, a disaster unfolds as a group of old houses collapses, causing a tragedy among the impoverished residents. A journalist endeavors to uncover the reasons behind this catastrophe. He discovers that Abu Fahad had constructed the house with non-compliant specifications, leading to its collapse. The journalist writes an investigative piece for the newspaper he works for, but the authorities remain unresponsive. He comes to realize that behind Abu Fahad, there is a wealthy and influential figure shielding him from legal accountability.

The film depicts life in Iraq during the Iraq-Iran war through the characters of the fighters Jabbar and Imad (played by Jalal Kamel and Nizar Al-Samarrai). They live in the city of Basra and the Iraqi countryside amidst the war atmosphere. Jalal develops a love relationship with the beautiful girl Soha, and they both join their military duties.

Ibrahim finds himself under intense nervous pressure as he seeks revenge for his father's murder by one of the sons of his village in a brawl that occurred between them. At the same time, a love relationship arises between him and the girl Ward, so he tries to persuade his family to forgive and distance themselves from bloodshed. On the other hand, Ibrahim tries to monitor what is happening in his work, dealing with theft and looting, attempting to rectify the situation in various ways.

In a dramatic context, Rahoumi experiences the final moments of his life as his life flashes before his eyes. He reminisces about his wife, who was unable to conceive, and remembers Naja, whom he regarded as his own daughter, and decides to leave her a significant portion of his wealth. However, his sister and her husband strongly object to this decision.
