Based on the novel of the same name by Daniil Granin. Engineer Chizhegov often travels on business to a small town, where he meets a woman who reciprocates his feelings. His remorse comes too late—Chizhegov loses the woman who was truly dear to him forever.

A wandering philosopher, who loved Ukraine with all his heart, he left an eternal trace in its history and culture.

After the end of the Civil War, nurse and intelligence officer Anna Dzyuba returns to her hometown with her commissar husband. Here she has to make a difficult choice between ideological associates who establish Soviet power and childhood friends associated with the anti-Soviet underground.

The protagonists of the film meet at the Republican Agricultural Exhibition of Advanced Practices in Kyiv.
