June 1946: Stalin invites Russian emigres to return to the motherland. It's a trap: when a ship-load from France arrives in Odessa, only a physician and his family are spared execution or prison. He and his French wife (her passport ripped up) are sent to Kiev. She wants to return to France immediately; he knows that they are captives and must watch every step.

Lera is an Olympic shooting champion. When she was unjustifiably disqualified on charges of doping, she suddenly became unwanted. By chance, the apartment in an abandoned building, from whose window Lera is supposed to fire her shot, also attracts Vadim. By a twist of fate, the characters meet.

The King, being of a poetic nature who prefers a bohemian way of life, opposes this in every possible way. The Queen then embarks on an affair with Lord Buckingham. The main enemy of all the heroes is the insidious Cardinal Madame Richelieu.

Based on the famous novel by Ilya Il'f and Yevgeniy Petrov this two-part-TV-movie tells the story of the of Ostap Bender and Kisa Vorobyaninov who are searching for hidden jewelry, hidden in one of twelve chairs by Vorobyaninov's aristocratic mother-in-law, to hide it during the revolution. But their priest, Father Fyodor found out about it and starts searching for the same chairs. During the movie the story is commented by the authors themselves who are writing it during the process.
