Bjarne is a hairdresser in a small Danish provincial town. He spends his time planning his daughter's wedding, which threatens to ruin the mild-mannered man. At the same time, the town's mayor is visited by his brother, who has stolen a Van Gogh and needs money to flee. The two stories quickly become intertwined.

Lars Erik is a successful fisherman, Sonja is a traditional housewife, proud of their new house bulging with consumer goods. Their love for each other is the sturdy footing on which their home is founded. Lars Erik employs three men on his trawler, and spends as fast as he earns, so when fishing quotas are cut he faces a crisis. One by one his men leave the boat, but he refuses to give up. Being a fisherman is like being a farmer - you depend on the wealth of mother nature herself. However, mother nature is like romance, highly capricious!
Max has finished school and is becoming an adult. He is on his way to find a life outside his mother's overprotective wings. When he meets Kaya, she gives him the final push to become independent and finally to move out. He moves over to his father but ends up as a lodger at the neighbour Steen Kold. Max would like to go to the Roskilde Festival with Kaya and gets help with the tickets from Steen Kold who is also coming along. Mom is afraid of what will happen to Max, so she decides to follow him and Steen Kold. This leads to many poignant and incredibly embarrassing episodes deeply rooted in her great love for her son, but also in her desire to still be in the centre of his attention.
Marie is juggling a demanding job as a doctor in oncology and her hectic family life. When she finds out she's pregnant with her third child, she handles it with her customary efficiency. But the stress is more than she bargained for, driving Marie to decisions she might live to regret.
