A little-known but lasting explosion of hip-hop culture grew out of the Filipino-American community of 1980s San Francisco. This film takes us into the beat of an aspiring mobile DJ crew in '84. Vanessa, sick of the the constraints and boring piano lessons in her conservative Filipino-American household.

The most coveted new sneaker goes on sale at 8am and sneakerheads across the country are camping out overnight to get them. RONNY, a young Filipino-American and die-hard sneakerhead, has been dreaming of these shoes for months, but his quest to get in line is hindered when a fast food cashier's racist joke offends his sister JUSTINE. Ronny's night takes a turn for the worst when he sees the same cashier in the sneaker line. Racial tensions among the sneakerheads intensify and Ronny's fear of not getting his beloved sneakers is quickly replaced with the fear that he and Justine are in serious danger.

He enrolls himself in a business course and finds himself in New York City -- in an apartment with two illegal Indonesian immigrants; Ferdy and Mira, in Flushing, Queens. As he grapples with the harsh reality of living in the city, he finds himself slowly attracted to Mira. She helps him realize the possibilities of starting life anew -- possibilities that are threatened by an impending marriage and his awaited return to Malaysia
