A boy is obsessed with the comic book hero Zhong Kui, an eccentric ghost catcher armed with a magic sword and sack. When his mother and younger sister are abducted by demons, the boy decides to seek help from Zhong to fight against vampires and revenants, zombies and goblins. Taking advantage of such special effects as freeze-frame and step-printing, The Ghost Catcher is a spectacular visual adventure.

It turns out that the murderer is a longtime friend of the rich man, and he has killed him because of his greed.

While making a harsh statement on those who exploited the national crisis to get rich, Tang Xiaodan portrayed vividly the sorrow and joy of the working class as well as an altruistic utopianism. The film begins with a song by Leung Mo-sik that describes the severity of war and the hardships endured by common people, intercut with real footages from war zones. The anti-war sentiment of the film is less political in nature and imbued with grave and genuine concern for the poor.
