Shankar and Shambhu are close friends, who live together in the same house with Shankar's mom. Shankar ferries people in his boat, while Shambhu chops trees for a living. Their friendship, habits, and hobbies are the same, so much so that both fall in love with the same young woman, Reshma. But Reshma gives her heart to Shankar, and decides to marry him. This angers Shambhu, and he decides not to have to do with Shankar and his mom anymore. Then the Thakur's new-found son decides to close the ferries, and operate a motorized boat. He challenges Shankar to a race, with the loser having to leave the community and the profession, to which Shankar agrees.

Sapna is a poor orphan woman, who lives with an elderly lady whom she calls her aunt. She is a petty thief and is arrested on several counts of theft.

Set in the early 1960s in a large Indian city. The story of three orphaned children, the eldest of whom, Debu, is twelve years old. Debu does his best to earn money so that his brother and sister do not become homeless vagrants. With the help of kind people, Debu manages to provide for his brother and sister, as well as himself.

Gopya lives has a step mother who considers him as her own son and wants him to get married. Gopya meets Gopi and both get attracted towards each other but his father tries to bring obstacles in it.

After fathering a child, Maharaj Bahadur Singh marries and starts a family. One of his sons grows up to usurp him, the other becomes Zorro.
