The story of a few untrained construction workers from poor underdeveloped parts of the country, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina or Macedonia, who carry out seasonal work in the highly-developed republic of Slovenia. Far from home, problems arise for the men - with their families, alcohol, the local population's derision and the "real Slovenian workers".

Three brothers struggle to survive on the harsh, inexorable and melancholy plains of Slovenia's Prekmurje region. The oldest flees from home in search of a better living, the middle brother survives by refusing to comply with tradition and the youngest, who received his education as a vet in the city simply cannot get used to the slow pace of country life. Will their father live to see the day when respect for the traditional ways will heal the wounds of the impoverished land?

Returning from prison, Peter falls into debt pursuing a relationship with the prostitute Ana and her pimp Gringo. To pay back the money owed, Peter proposes that Ana and Gringo visit his father with him. They accept his proposal, thinking they might trick some money out of the old mountaineer with a story about Ana's upcoming marriage to Peter (with Gringo as the best man). During the long and colorful journey the three become friends and complicit in the deception. Peter's father, though, instantly recognizes the scam and steals the bride from his incompetent son. Gringo is happy with this turn of events but Peter is irritated by it. However, the father's sudden death before the registrar prevents Ana and Gringo from inheriting. When the dreams of material wealth vanish, what is left is the love between Ana and Peter, and the friendship that struck up between the three, so much so that at the end Gringo sacrifices himself for the couple's happiness.

A TV journalist making a documentary in a factory finds out that the workers have been on strike and tries to analyze the strike in his film, but is thwarted by the TV company. His failure at his job is interwoven with his failed marriage.

State security inspector Ivan reveals an inserted terrorists in Yugoslavia, sent there by Croatian emigrants, enemies of the above socialist state. Their mission is to select the appropriate places on Adriatic coast which they would later blow up. The terrorists are expected to set a series of explosions that would cause a public disturbance and uncertainty in the Yugoslavia's position in Europe. Ivan follows Pavle and Elsa who are staying in Croatia as tourists, stepping into action in a crucial moment.

A partisan battalion falls into enemy trap more than once, which makes them suspect it's about treason. Their commissar and commander move the unit in a remote settlement in order to discover the enemy agent. This draws a lot of suspicion and distrust within the unit, and finally it was the head of the battalion who was charged as guilty, and executed. However, was he the real intruder? The commissar and the commander take the battalion to a new battle without definitive knowledge of the whole present situation.
