A young poet and dreamer, poor as a church mouse, discovers that he is to inherit a vast fortune from his very wealthy, dying uncle. However, there is one catch to the inheritance - the property can only be obtained on the condition that the young man marries a virgin on the day of his uncle's funeral.
The conflict, in which a mature, thirty-year-old woman must choose between her energetic, down-to-earth, and selfish husband, a priest, and her eighteen-year-old admirer, centers on the question of what constitutes the strength and value of men and women.
A mischievous grandfather likes to play spies with his friends, thereby complicating the family well-being of his daughter-in-law and the love life of his granddaughter Tereza.
