The 31st year of the Showa Era (1956) marked the tenth year since Japan's defeat in World War II. It was when Japan took its first step out of post-war poverty to rejoin the international community. In old downtown Tokyo, a teacher and her students try to pass down Doyo (Japanese traditional children's songs) as the root of Japanese cultural identity to the future generations.
The story follows Hariko, a junior high schooler who moonlights as an illusionist, experiencing a meteoric rise in popularity and newfound financial success. Taking advantage of this, Hariko's mother hatches a plan to demolish the old apartment complex she manages and replace it with a new building. However, four stubborn residents refuse to vacate. Running out of options, her mother sends the now-famous Hariko to deal with them directly—but what awaits her there is entirely unexpected...
The protagonist, Tomomi, continues to work, losing sight of her goals and wondering "what am I working for" as she is constantly getting told off every day. One day, she makes a big mistake and gets severely scolded by her manager. As she is thinking about quitting her current job, Tomomi's heart is shaken by some words from her parents back home. Her almost-forgotten "memories" awaken her will to live.

Upon reaching the train station to death, a dejected soul is informed that he is lucky and will have another chance at life. Watched over by a neutral spirit named Purapura, the soul must figure out what his greatest sin and mistake in his former life was, before his time limit in Makoto's body runs out. He also has a number of other lesser duties he must complete, such as understanding what led Makoto to commit suicide in the first place and learning how to enjoy his second chance at life.
