While playing cards, Col. Francis Fielding is unjustly accused of cheating by the Earl of St. Albans. He soon dies, and Leonore is adopted by his sister Lady Mountstephen, but it's not much of an improvement: the "lady" hates Leonore, treats her badly and finally disowns her. Things look grim for Leonore until Lord Fitzmaurice loans her a sum of money. Unfortunately, that deed arouses the anger of the wildly jealous Lady Norton, who is secretly married to him. Complications ensue.

When the United States enters World War I, the widowed Helen worries that she will lose her only son David, who has just turned 21. Although David patriotically urges the employees at his factory to enlist, he reluctantly gives in to his mother's pleas to remain at home with her. When David is drafted, his panic-stricken mother alters the date on his birth certificate, although the later birth date implies that he is illegitimate. Disgusted, David enlists under an assumed name, thus shaming Helen, who confesses her dishonesty to the townspeople. Her son, now in uniform, then forgives her.

A wagon train of "Forty-Niners" heading for the California gold fields includes a girl, her father and an old black servant, who have hidden their family jewels and life savings in their wagon. One of the men in the train plots with some Indians to attack the caravan and steal the family's wealth. In order to isolate their wagon, the villain has one of his men pose as a small pox victim so that the wagon train will leave them behind. After they fight with the Indians and the band of outlaws, the girl and her family are saved by the leader of the wagon train.
