The film tells a thrilling, humorous and emotional story of a couple of young people who are brought together by chance on a pilgrimage through the city and the Danube countryside. A young convict on the run from prison is accidentally crossed by a young girl whom he kidnaps. However, the girl develops a special relationship with her captor, gradually transforming him from a hostage into a fellow prisoner. Nor has she experienced much good in her short life. 80-year-old Ali Ungar comes across a book by a former SS officer describing his wartime activities in Slovakia. He realises his parents were executed by him. He sets out to take revenge but finds instead his 70-year-old son, Georg, a retired teacher. Georg, who had avoided his father all his life, decides to find out more about him and offers Ali to be his interpreter.
Marta and Jozef have four children. Jozef commutes to Prague for work. Marta works in a bakery, devotes all her energy to children. The eldest daughter Lenka is currently experiencing her first real love for the student Karol and wants to go to America with him. Her brother Milan spends a difficult period of puberty with a group of boys who amuse themselves by spying on couples making love. The nine-year-old accordionist Katka is jealous of her five-year-old sister Milka, because she thinks that her mother pays more attention to her. The story begins at the moment when Marta announces to Jozef that they are expecting their fifth child. The events that follow are a difficult but at the same time necessary test for all family members...

It's spring 1939. The bishop in Banska Bystrica finds out that in the village of Piargy, that was buried by an avalanche a few days ago, the Antichrist was born. The bishop calls on priest Balaz and asks him to investigate the statements of Johanka, the only survivor of the catastrophe. Balaz wants to know what exactly happened in Piargy.
