Peyami Safa's novel Cumbadan Rumbaya features some of the most extraordinary characters in his works. It tells the story of Karagümrüklü Cemile, whose sole desire is to escape her dilapidated home and neighborhood and move into an apartment in Nişantaşı, where she hopes to find a wealthy husband.
An example of social realism in Turkish cinema, the story follows a bus driver who takes side of the poor who has been exploited by a rich man with the promise of making new apartments for them.

The film deals with the relationship between a nomadic Gypsy community and the local people. Hüseyin, one of the town's leading figures, has his eye on Gül. Hüseyin plans to ruin Ali's business and wear him down in order to win Gül's heart. To this end, he will collaborate with Sabri, the brother of Hasan, the leader of the Gypsies.

Ahmet supports his elderly mother by driving a taxi. He is a trusted and beloved member of his neighborhood. Ahmet helps a woman who gets into his car escape from a gang. Later, gang members who catch Ahmet find out where the young woman is. The woman is killed during a commotion in a hotel room. The gang knocks Ahmet unconscious and leaves him there, then reports the incident to the police. The only way Ahmet can prove his innocence is to flee. However, this adventure will lead to new losses.
