Old-time musical star Schyler Jarvis, now wealthy, is dying; his last act is a visionary plan for the future happiness of his son, swing bandleader Louis Jarvis, and Honey Carter, daughter of his long-lost love. At the end of the 1950s, French documentarian François Reichenbach spent eighteen months traveling the United States, documenting its diverse regions, their inhabitants, and their pastimes. The result is a journey through a multitude of different Americas, filtered through a French sensibility.

Gaston is in love with Brigitte, daughter of the Baroness, who claims to have a lover. Gaston sets off for Paris, with 300,000 francs borrowed from the Baroness, to find his rival. He is robbed and forced to work in cabarets, where his father, his fiancée and the Baroness, not to mention the Curé, come looking for him. All ends well.
