After her girlfriend Iris breaks up with her, Mari, an aspiring playwright and lyricist, casts her replacement in a musical about their life.

A week before her twentieth birthday, Fiona comes home to a box of twelve identical brown leather journals, dated from 1985 to 1994, and packed full of writing. As she reads the stories written in these journals, she starts slipping away from her life, into the life on the pages.
