Based on the novel "My Sweet Orange Tree" by José Mauro de Vasconcelos. Majid lives with his mother in his bad-tempered stepfather's house. He gets on Javad's lorry secretly but the trucker scolds and beats him. Hating Javad, Majid promises to kill him. He goes to a trainer to get ready and confides in a tree. Javad realises Majid's emotional needs and they form a deep friendship after a while.

Poor boy treats a sweet lemon tree as his only friend, talking to it, and learning important values in the process. But one day the tree must be cut.

Zezé is an 8 year old boy who, although a naughty boy, has a good heart. He leads a very modest life, due to the fact that his father has been unemployed for a long time, and has the habit of having long conversations with a sweet orange tree which is in his backyard. Until one day he meets Portuga, a man who begins to help him and soon becomes his best friend.

In the poor area of Recife, an old washerwoman launders clothes to survive and support her family. Her husband Zé Luis, a former sailor, is crazy due to a hit of the boom of a mast on his head. Her older son Raimundo works in a grocery and selling mangoes on the street, trying to save money to move to the Southeastern with his girl-friend Aurora. Her daughter wants to be a prostitute to have a better quality of life. Her younger son is seriously sick.
