During a reception at a noble house, during the XVIII century, an ancient courtesan takes the petals of a marigold off, one-by-one, and remembers his encounter - and separation - of the woman he loved.
Vasco is a medical student in Lisbon, supported by his rich aunts, whom he had falsely told he had already graduated. In fact, he devotes himself to a bohemian life, preferring the popular fairs and pretty women, especially Alice, a seamstress from the Castelinhos quarter, which rather upsets her ambitious father, tailor Caetano, who is familiar with Vasco's debts. After failing yet another final exam, he is surprised by his aunts' announcement that they will visit him in Lisbon to see his practice.
How happy and proud they are those two ladies back in Oporto! Thanks to them, their bright nephew can study medicine in Lisbon and may already have become a doctor. Little do they know, not only Vasco wastes all his time drinking, dancing and picking up girls but he has just failed his final exam! And in that same day, he receives an email from the two aunts announcing their visit to Lisbon! Will he be able to make them believe he is such a good student as they think?
A Portuguese bourgeois dares to look at a Spanish lady's delicate ankles at the beach, but his wife will have nothing of it. Later, it's him that forbids his daughter from seeing a young man she had met at the same beach.
