The drama from the time of the Nazi occupation begins at the train station, where a transport with German soldiers is passing. The train is stopped due to improvised sabotage by one of the railway workers. Resistance liaison Růžena Kubínová is arrested in a random raid. The cynical councilor Dönnert discovers her false documents and has her brutally interrogated. He suspects that she could contribute to exposing the entire group. He puts a informant, Herta, in her cell.

The shopkeeper František Diviš offers cheap goods at the fairs, while the co-owner of the traveling variety show Bohouš Vosáhlo offers unpretentious folk entertainment. They therefore meet very often. Neither of them earns a comfortable living from their work, but they do not allow themselves to worry unnecessarily. However, this changes when a little boy enters their lives. Pepík is an orphan, there is no one to take care of him, and both fairground vendors cannot resist the plea in the children's eyes...

The plump, punctual and slightly despotic Mr. Tříška worked as a housing officer, which completely damaged his psychological resilience, he is short-tempered and easily angered. The intended rest in the countryside, where he went with his whole family, however, turns out completely differently than he expected - because all the hardworking hands join together to ensure the fastest possible completion of the agricultural work, and there is also time left for his singing interests. And the main character is finally so carried away by the new environment that he eagerly joins in.

Míla, the daughter of factory owner Janota, likes the doctor and, with the help of his housekeeper Amálka, sneaks into his home disguised as a poor shoelace saleswoman. She first prepares for her role by exploring the outskirts, where she meets Vendelín Pleticha, who becomes her guide to the local pubs and her teacher of the vernacular. Dr. Přelouč is enthusiastic about the poor, uneducated girl and tries to teach her the basics of social behavior and standard language. All this until he discovers that Míla has deceived him and that Pleticha is not her father, as she had claimed...
