Szymek, a young man at clash with his home village takes up a job as a geologist and marries a girl whose parents dissaprove of him.
Basia and her aunt live in peace far away from war efforts. One day that peace is shattered when a concentration camp prisoner, a communist activist seeks refuge in their house.
Living only with her elderly father, Krystyna runs the household and works as a modest clerk. However, her fate takes a turn. The girl gets a job at a company, and one of the clients, Jan Merlecki, wins her heart. Things quickly become complicated, though. An anonymous phone call to her beloved's parents, followed by their intervention to prevent the young couple from marrying, prompts Krystyna to make a dramatic decision.
