In 19th century France, Jean Valjean, a man imprisoned for stealing bread, must flee a relentless policeman named Javert. The pursuit consumes both men's lives, and soon Valjean finds himself in the midst of the student revolutions in France.

When the father dies, Celestine decides to quit her job and leave, but when a young girl is raped and murdered, Celestine believes that the Monteils' groundskeeper, Joseph, is guilty, and stays on in order to prove it. She uses her sexuality and the promise of marriage to get Joseph to confess -- but things do not go as planned.

Along the way, he saves a young girl, Gisèle d'Angoulême, from a masked individual who wanted to kidnap her.

A young woman leaves her hometown and husband to explore Paris, where she becomes entangled in a rivalry between a doctor and a novelist in high society.
