On the turn of the 20th century, in Netherlands, three socialist activists and brothers are imprisoned for a crime they didn't commit. The prosecutor tries to get to the truth, but their comrades and others betray them.

Fully dedicated Gjalt (68) takes care of his wife Anke (67) who suffers from an aggressive form of dementia that is accompanied by delusions, fear visions and personality change. Gjalt makes every effort to alleviate Ankes suffering at the isolated situated farm in the desolated Frisian landscape. With the final farewell nearby, Gjalt's love for Anke feels stronger than ever before.

After serving his sentence for a sex crime, Nanne's son Arnout returns home to the farm in Friesland. Consumed by a poisonous cocktail of grief, hatred, biting self-reproach and against the backdrop of the coercive mores of a conservative Frisian rural community, Nanne tries to regain his compassion for Arnout.

In the year 2000, a jury convenes in Friesland to elect the Sportsman of the Century. One man, Sake Wiarda, tries to convince his fellow-jury members not to nominate a sports hero like Abe Lenstra, but to give preference to the Frisian pole-squatter Taeke Jongsma. In flashbacks, Wiarda tells his audience the life story of this worker's son, who since childhood tries to escape the oppression of the working class in the thirties. Taeke finds out he is a splendid pole-squatter, but his record attempts are repeatedly thwarted by his great rival in love. Against the background of the historical changes in the previous century, the love story gradually unfolds between the pole-squatter and the farmer's daughter.
